Ueno Park is right in front of the station, so enter the park and turn right at the National Museum of Western Art on your right. Keep walking straight until you see the majestic building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"i-1\">Honkan (Japanese Gallery) <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The building you\u2019ll see is the Honkan (Japanese Gallery) of the Tokyo National Museum. It\u2019s a Japanese-style building that was completed in 1938 and has a tiled roof. It\u2019s also been designated an Important Cultural Property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"428\" src=\"https:\/\/careerchange-diary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Tokyo-National-Museum-20221210-20.webp\" alt=\"This photo shows the Honkan of the Tokyo National Museum. It is a traditional Japanese-style building with a tiled roof over a reinforced concrete structure.\" class=\"wp-image-21193\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"i-2\">Hyokeikan<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Hyokeikan is on the left as you enter the museum grounds. It was built in 1909 to commemorate the wedding of the Taisho crown prince. \u201cHyokei\u201d means \u201cto express congratulations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"428\" src=\"https:\/\/careerchange-diary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Tokyo-National-Museum-20221210-17.webp\" alt=\"This picture shows the Hyokeikan of the Tokyo National Museum. It is a neo-baroque building with beautiful greenish-blue roofs in the center and on both sides.\" class=\"wp-image-21194\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On the day of our visit, the special exhibition \u201cThe Arabian Way: Treasures of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia\u201d was being held. The Hyokeikan is usually closed to the public, so it was a rare opportunity to see the inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/careerchange-diary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Tokyo-National-Museum-20221210-13.webp\" alt=\"This photo shows the bronze lion statues at the entrance of the Hyokeikan. In 1978, the building was designated an Important Cultural Property as a representative example of the Western architecture of the late Meiji period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"i-3\">The Japanese Archaeology Gallery at the Heiseikan<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As I entered the Japanese Archaeology Gallery, I was greeted by a beautifully dressed female haniwa (terra-cotta tomb figurine).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"i-4\">Woman in full dress Haniwa&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>This haniwa is a rare full-length standing female figure. The costume is more elaborate than it appears. Her hair is combed and adorned with a headband, and she is dressed in earrings, a necklace, and bracelets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/careerchange-diary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Tokyo-National-Museum-20221210-26.webp\" alt=\"This photo shows the whole body of a haniwa named &quot;Woman in full dress.&quot; She is 126.5cm tall and wears a necklace, earrings, ear beads, and a cue ball. This alien-like figure has large eyes that appear to be wearing glasses, which is why it is named after \u201cShakoki,\u201d the Inuit term for snow goggles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/careerchange-diary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Tokyo-National-Museum-20221210-11.webp\" alt=\"This photo shows the &quot;Shakokidogu.&quot; It is 34.2 cm tall and is missing its left leg. The word &quot;shakoki&quot; means goggles in Japanese. The large eyes of this haniwa resemble the snow goggles used by the Inuit, a northern tribe, and so it is called a Shakokidogu.\" class=\"wp-image-21200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/careerchange-diary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Tokyo-National-Museum-20221210-11.webp 600w, https:\/\/careerchange-diary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Tokyo-National-Museum-20221210-11-160x160.webp 160w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\"><figcaption>Dogu: Shakokidogu , Excavated at Kamegaoka site, Tsugaru-shi, Aomori, Jomon Period, 1000-400 B.C.(Important Cultural Property)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This Dogu is missing its left leg. It\u2019s uncommon to find a complete clay figurine during an excavation. The Jomon people believed that destroying the parts of the Dogu that matched the disease would cure it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to Haniwa and Dogu figurines, the exhibition room also features Jomon and Yayoi pottery. Visitors can see artifacts that they may have only seen in textbooks before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"i-6\">Museum Shop<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The museum store was located on the first floor of the museum\u2019s main building. In this photo, you can see the mascot of the Tokyo National Museum\u2019s official character, \u201cTohaku-Kun.\u201d Tohaku-Kun was inspired by the \u201cdancing Haniwa\u201d clay figurine excavated in Kumagaya City, Saitama Prefecture. The \u201cTohaku-Kun\u201d merchandise included socks, necklaces, bags, mittens, earpicks, and band-aids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/careerchange-diary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Tokyo-National-Museum-20221210-15.webp\" alt=\"This photo shows a stuffed doll of &quot;Tohaku-kun,&quot; the official character of the Tokyo National Museum. The models on the postcard are &quot;dancing Haniwa&quot; and &quot;Shakokidogu.&quot;\" class=\"wp-image-21225\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The shop also had postcards, stationery, T-shirts, accessories, and snacks designed based on national treasures and famous paintings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/careerchange-diary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Tokyo-National-Museum-20221210-03.webp\" alt=\"This photo shows the bookshelf on the second floor of the museum store. The bookshelves were lined with beautiful books on art and archaeology, reaching up to the ceiling. They also had a collection of exhibition catalogs that weren\u2019t available in regular bookstores. I was so engrossed in looking at the bookshelves that time flew by. If you\u2019re interested in art and archaeology, it\u2019s worth visiting the museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"i-7\">Space to spend freely<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Tokyo National Museum has benches and sofas for visitors to use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/careerchange-diary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Tokyo-National-Museum-20221210-24.webp\" alt=\"This illustration is a map of the Tokyo National Museum premises.\" class=\"wp-image-21215\" srcset=\"https:\/\/careerchange-diary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Tokyo-National-Museum-20221210-24.webp 600w, https:\/\/careerchange-diary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Tokyo-National-Museum-20221210-24-160x160.webp 160w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\"><figcaption>Museum Map, the Tokyo National Museum<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"i-8\">Lounge between Heiseikan and Honkan<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In front of you is a garden with tea houses scattered around a pond. It\u2019s a cozy space where you can relax on a sofa while enjoying the view of the garden. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/careerchange-diary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Tokyo-National-Museum-20221210-07.webp\" alt=\"This photo shows the lounge between the Honkan and the Heiseikan of the Tokyo National Museum. Brown sofas are lined along the glass wall facing the garden, and some people are resting on them while looking out over the park. Others are taking a nap.\" class=\"wp-image-21205\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Many people are taking a nap here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"i-9\">Horyuji Treasures<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Armchairs were placed in the lounge on the first floor, with glass windows facing the garden providing a view of the garden and pond in front of the Horyuji Treasures.<\/span> These armchairs were designed by Mario Bellini (1935-) of Italy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/careerchange-diary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Tokyo-National-Museum-20221210-10.webp\" alt=\"This photograph shows two wine-colored armchairs in the entrance hall on the first floor of the Gallery of Horyuji Treasures.
