This time we visited&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.suntory.com\/factory\/yamazaki\/?_ga=2.113432900.253992748.1668942469-1885286596.1666674492\" target=\"_blank\">Suntory Yamazaki distiller<\/a>y. It takes only 40 minutes from Kyoto by train. Suntory Yamazaki distillery is located at the foot of Mt. Tennozan, southwest of Kyoto. Yamazaki, where Suntory Yamazaki Distillery is located, has these two advantages. Yamazaki has long been known for its excellent water. Sen no Rikyu, who perfected the Japanese tea ceremony (chanoyu), established his tea house \u201cMyokian\u201d in Yamazaki, a national treasure. Also, because of the confluence of the Katsura, Uji, and Kizu Rivers, Yamazaki-\u201cJikan\u201d is humid and suitable for whiskey aging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/careerchange-diary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Suntory-Yamazaki-Distillery-20221127_01.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20621\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I arrived at Oyamazaki Station, about 20 minutes from Kyoto Kawaramachi Station on the Hankyu Kyoto Main Line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/careerchange-diary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Suntory-Yamazaki-Distillery-20221127_28.webp\" alt=\"This photo shows a poster of Takarazuka Revue on the platform of Oyamazaki Station on the Hankyu Kyoto Main Line.\" class=\"wp-image-20622\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I saw posters of&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/kageki.hankyu.co.jp\/english\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Takarazuka Revue<\/a>&nbsp;at various places in Oyamazaki Station. Takarazuka Revue is a singing troupe composed entirely of unmarried women and is very popular in Japan. The Hankyu Railway company is the operator of this troupe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From Oyamazaki station, I walked to the distillery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/careerchange-diary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Suntory-Yamazaki-Distillery-20221127_02.webp\" alt=\"This photo shows a signboard on the border between Osaka and Kyoto prefectures. The words &quot;Osaka Prefecture&quot; and &quot;Shimamoto Town&quot; are printed in blue letters on white metal.\" class=\"wp-image-20623\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Yamazaki was the scene of the \u201cBattle of Yamazaki\u201d in 1582.&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Toyotomi_Hideyoshi\" target=\"_blank\">Toyotomi Hideyoshi<\/a>&nbsp;won this battle and became the supreme ruler of Japan. It was called the \u201cBattle of Tennozan.\u201d Even today, \u201cTennozan\u201d is a metaphor for a significant match or phase in sports, politics, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/careerchange-diary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Suntory-Yamazaki-Distillery-20221127_03.webp\" alt=\"This photo shows a signboard at the border between Osaka and Kyoto prefectures. The words &quot;Kyoto Prefecture&quot; and &quot;Oyama Town&quot; are printed in blue letters on white metal.\" class=\"wp-image-20624\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On my way to Suntory Yamazaki Distillery, I crossed the border between Kyoto and Osaka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"i-1\">Suntory Yamazaki Distillery<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I arrived at the distillery in 10 minutes on foot from Oyamazaki station. Crossing the railroad crossing, I found the entrance to Suntory Yamazaki Distillery.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/careerchange-diary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Suntory-Yamazaki-Distillery-20221127_04.webp\" alt=\"This photo shows the entrance to the Suntory Yamazaki distillery. The paid course allows visitors to observe the manufacturing process of preparation, fermentation, distillation, and storage at the factory. The free class includes a tour of the Yamazaki Whiskey Museum only.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"449\" src=\"https:\/\/careerchange-diary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022-11-21_6-32-03.webp\" alt=\"This photo shows a whiskey barrel. The president of Kotobukiya was the founder, Torii Shinjiro (1879-1962). The distiller-in-chief was Taketsuru Masataka (1894-1979). He is known as the \u201cfather of Japanese whiskey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/careerchange-diary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Suntory-Yamazaki-Distillery-20221127_10.webp\" alt=\"This photo shows the entrance to the Whiskey Museum at Suntory Yamazaki Distillery. You can see the quaint retro wooden staircase.\" class=\"wp-image-20629\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The interior of the Whiskey Museum has a quaint wooden decor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"i-3\">The Story of the Founding of the Company<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGo for it. You won\u2019t know unless you try,\u201d was a favorite saying of Torii Shinjiro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/careerchange-diary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Suntory-Yamazaki-Distillery-20221127_08.webp\" alt=\"This photo shows the founder of Suntory, Torii Shinjiro, on display in the Whiskey Museum at Suntory's Yamazaki Distillery. You won't know unless you try.&quot;\" class=\"wp-image-20630\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>His goal was to create a spirit of challenge that emphasizes taking on new challenges without fear of failure. Suntory still carries this idea as its founding spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"i-4\">Old Suntory whiskeys<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Many old Suntory whiskeys were on display at the Whiskey Museum. The photo shows \u201cAkadama Port Wine,\u201d launched in 1907.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/careerchange-diary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Suntory-Yamazaki-Distillery-20221127_11.webp\" alt=\"This photo shows &quot;Akadama Port Wine&quot; on display at the Whiskey Museum of Suntory Yamazaki Distillery.\" class=\"wp-image-20632\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The photo shows \u201cAkadama Port Wine,\u201d first released in 1907. This wine sold phenomenally well at the time. It laid the foundation for Suntory\u2019s management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The photo below shows \u201cOld\u201d whisky, created at the Yamazaki distillery in 1940. Due to the wartime situation, Kotobukiya could not release this whisky, and sales began in 1950 after the war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/careerchange-diary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Suntory-Yamazaki-Distillery-20221127_12.webp\" alt=\"This photo shows &quot; Old &quot; whisky on display at the Whisky Museum of Suntory Yamazaki Distillery.\" class=\"wp-image-20633\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The shape of the bottle, called \u201c<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Daruma_doll\" target=\"_blank\">Daruma<\/a>,\u201d is still used today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The whisky in the photo below, called \u201cKakubin,\u201d went on sale in 1937.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/careerchange-diary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Suntory-Yamazaki-Distillery-20221127_13.webp\" alt=\"This photo shows a whisky called &quot;Kakubin&quot; displayed at the Whisky Museum of the Suntory Yamazaki Distillery. The age of blind faith in imported spirits is over, and I have Suntory Whiskey, the supreme domestic sake! \u201d This advertising text was published in national newspapers and was well received. In the 1970s, Sammy Davis Jr. appeared in a TV commercial for this whiskey. Sammy Davis Jr. drank the whiskey and mumbled, \u201cMmmm, Suntory! \u201d became very popular in Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"i-5\">Whiskey Library<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Whiskey bottles lined the walls of this space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/careerchange-diary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Suntory-Yamazaki-Distillery-20221127_15.webp\" alt=\"This photo shows the Whiskey Library in the Whiskey Museum at Suntory Yamazaki Distillery. There was a selection of \u201cYamazaki\u201d whiskey of various ages. It is limited to one bottle per person, and the bottle has a serial number. Besides these, I bought chocolates for whiskey nibbles, and snacks smoked with oak wood. During the tour, the staff taught me how to make a highball. I made a very tasty highball at home using the method I learned!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After visiting the Whiskey Museum, I can now taste and smell whiskey more delicately.
