Nanzen-ji Temple was founded in 1291. It is the most prestigious of all Zen temples in Japan. There are many historic sites within the precincts of Nanzen-Ji Temple. I went up to the ground level and walked through the brick Keage Tunnel to Nanzen-Ji Temple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/careerchange-diary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Nanzen-Ji-20221127_06.webp\" alt=\"This photo shows the Keage Tunnel from the east. The tunnel is brick, 3 m high, 2.6 m wide, and approximately 18 m long.\" class=\"wp-image-20583\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Keage Tunnel is called \u201cNejirimampo.\u201d The meaning of \u201cmampo\u201d is Tunnel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/careerchange-diary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Nanzen-Ji-20221127_01.webp\" alt=\"This photo shows the Keage Tunnel from the inside. Above the Keage Tunnel was the incline where the trolleys carried the ships. To withstand the weight of the boats and carts, the Keage Tunne was built of bricks stacked at an angle.n angle to create the Tunnel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"i-2\">The Sanmon gate at Nanzen-Ji<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Sanmon gate was founded in 1295. The government destroyed it in 1369, but the present Sanmon gate was rebuilt in 1628.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/careerchange-diary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022-11-19_19-50-38.webp\" alt=\"This photo is a panoramic view of the temple's Sanmon gate at Nanzen-Ji Temple. It is one of the three most essential gates in Japan. The other two are Chion-in Temple (Kyoto Prefecture) and Kuon-Ji Temple (Yamanashi Prefecture).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/careerchange-diary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Nanzen-Ji-20221127_09.webp\" alt=\"This photo is a panoramic view of the temple's Sanmon gate at Nanzen-Ji Temple. This gate is a massive wooden structure with a height of 22 meters.\" class=\"wp-image-20586\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Sanmon gate exuded history and dignity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/careerchange-diary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Nanzen-Ji-20221127_10.webp\" alt=\"Visitors can tour the interior of the  Sanmon gate. A signboard with the words &quot;Sanmon Entrance&quot; written in Japanese stands next to the door.\" class=\"wp-image-20587\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Visitors could view the interior of the Sanmon gate from 8:40 am to 5:00 pm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/careerchange-diary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Nanzen-Ji-20221127_11.webp\" alt=\"This photo shows the inside of the Sanmon gate. It offers the steep stairs to the high observatory and the rope used to climb the steep slope.\" class=\"wp-image-20588\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This Sanmon gate had a wooden staircase to the high observatory. These stairs were so steep that I had to climb them with a rope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This high observatory is the setting of a famous scene in the Kabuki play \u201cSanmon Gosan no Kiri.\u201d Here, Ishikawa Goemon, the play\u2019s main character, gives a hailing gesture, saying, \u201cIs it a great view, a great view.\u201d Ishikawa Goemon, a criminal, was executed after extolling the beauty of the Kyoto landscape, as seen from this high observatory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/careerchange-diary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Nanzen-Ji-20221127_05.webp\" alt=\"This photo is the view looking west from the high observatory of the Sanmon Gate. On the south side, I could see the Tenju-An garden, which is famous for its Karesansui (dry landscape \u2013 \u67af\u5c71\u6c34) and Chisen circuit-style garden\uff08a rock pond and a lush garden \u2013 \u6c60\u6cc9\u56de\u904a\u5f0f\u5ead\u5712.\uff09<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"i-3\">Nanzen-Ji Aqueduct<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This Aqueduct was built in 1888. It is an arched aqueduct 93 meters long and 9 meters high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/careerchange-diary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Nanzen-Ji-20221127_03.webp\" alt=\"This photo shows the Nanzen-Ji Aqueduct. It is a brick aqueduct 93 meters long and 9 meters high.\" class=\"wp-image-20591\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It is 93 m long and 9 m high and is an arched brick aqueduct. It carries irrigation water from Lake Biwa to Kyoto through the precincts of Nanzen-Ji Temple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/careerchange-diary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Nanzen-Ji-20221127_02.webp\" alt=\"This photo shows the Nanzen-Ji Aqueduct. It is 9 meters high and arched.\" class=\"wp-image-20592\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The arched piers, made of brick and granite, blend in with the surrounding landscape with a stately appearance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/careerchange-diary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Nanzen-Ji-20221127_04.webp\" alt=\"This photo shows the Aqueduct running over Nanzen-Ji Aqueduct.\" class=\"wp-image-20593\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Climb the Aqueduct, and I could see the water flow for several hundred meters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Within the spacious precincts of Nanzen-Ji Temple, there are many other historical sites besides the Sanmon gate and the Aqueduct.
